Small Learning Communities
South Medford is comprised of four small learning communities (also known as SLCs). Regardless of the SLC, it is our goal to have high achievement and equitable learning experiences for all students. All freshman are enrolled in the Freshman Academy in 9th grade. Sophomores, juniors and seniors are enrolled in thematic SLCs that span their 10th through 12th grade years at South. Our school themes are:
The Freshman Academy
The Freshman Academy introduces incoming freshman students to the traditions and spirit of South High, while acting as a bridge between middle school and high school to facilitate academic success for all students. Our caring staff makes personal connections with their students, enabling them to provide specific support for struggling or disengaged students. Students desiring more academic challenges are encouraged to participate in our “open honors” programs in World Studies and English classes. Our goal is to establish a culture of cooperation, respect, and responsibility that our students can take with them as we help them select their next SLC for their sophomore year and beyond.
